Neringa - one of the best resorts in Lithuania and the entire Baltic Sea coast. Four villages located along the Curonian Spit are united under this name: Nida (administrative center), Juodkrante, Preila and Pervalka. Neringa occupies half of the Curonian Spit. The second half belongs to the Kaliningrad region of Russia. The unique natural conditions of the spit, the dunes (one of the highest in Europe), as well as the special ecosphere became the reason for the inclusion of the Curonian Spit in the UNESCO World Heritage List. This was the first time in the history of the organization that an object belonging to two states at once was included in the list.

The city stretches for 52 kilometers, its main street is a highway running among the dunes. The total number of inhabitants of the entire Neringa is 3600 people (as of 2009). It is difficult to call Neringa a city in the truest sense of the word. This is a unique natural and urban complex that combines picturesque Baltic landscapes with careful development that does not violate the harmony of the environment. At the same time, for a long time the dunes were considered a threat to the settlements on the Curonian Spit. Sand constantly advanced, burying entire villages. In many ways, this was the result of human activity: the soil layer was destroyed due to uncontrolled deforestation and livestock breeding. Over time, the advance of the dunes was stopped, but since then a lot of peasant houses half buried under the sand have remained in Neringa.

The beaches of the Curonian Spit are among the best on the entire coast of the Baltic Sea. A strip of pure sand 25-70 m wide stretches along the entire coast of Neringa. In 2001, the beaches in Nida were awarded the "blue flag" for environmental cleanliness that meets world standards, and in 2004, the beaches of Juodkrante were also awarded it.

The main resorts of Neringa are Nida and Juodokrante. Peace, nature and the sea are the main components of the tourist popularity of these small villages. You can get to the Curonian Spit, to Neringa, only by ferry from Klaipeda. The main ferry service, which is located in the city center, at the mouth of the Dane River, operates all year round, in summer the ferry runs every half hour, and even more often on weekends, in winter every hour. There is another ferry crossing, in the southern part of Klaipeda, closer to the fishing port, mainly for transporting trucks. Having crossed the bay, you can travel along the Curonian Spit either by car, or by bus or fixed-route taxi, which depart directly from the ferry crossing. They run to Kaliningrad and Zelenogradsk, and to Nida almost every half an hour.

Arriving in this wonderful city, it is worth visiting its northern part, to the right of the ferry crossing. The ancient Swedish fortress Kopgalis has been preserved there, which houses the most interesting Maritime Museum with magnificent collections, and nearby the Oceanarium. On the way to the Maritime Museum, you can see the old fishing boats of the MRT and STR types, permanently moored on the shore.

To the left of the ferry is the small village of Smiltyne, from where paved paths begin leading to the beaches on the Baltic Sea. There are three beaches - female, general and male. The paths go through a beautiful pine forest, gradually rising to medium high dunes. The Baltic weather does not always please with the hot sun, but a lot of people still go to the sea, just to take a walk and breathe in the sea air saturated with iodine.

Approximately 9 km from the ferry crossing, in Alksnin, there is a police post where they collect entry fees to the territory of Neringa, which is a National Park. In the Alksnine region in January 1945, there were fierce battles with the Nazis for the liberation of Klaipeda. There are mass graves and a monument to Soviet soldiers, carved from a whole piece of stone, raised from the bottom of the bay during dredging. And the whole section from Smiltyne to Alksnine was once walked by us up and down. What wonderful mushroom places here! Especially in the thickets of creeping mountain pine in autumn there are many flywheels.

18 km from the ferry crossing is the village of Juodkrantė, which used to be a place where amber was mined, and although now this industry has almost come to naught, there is a good Amber Art Gallery here. In Soviet times, a large pioneer camp of the Lithuanian Fishing Fleet Administration, a rest home and a boarding house were located here. And now private small hotels, villas, a restaurant, a cafe are at the service of vacationers. Juodkrante is famous for its "mountain of witches" - Raganu kalnas, where there is a unique composition of wooden sculptures: witches, witchers, devils, heroes of the legends about Neringa, carved from oak by folk craftsmen from all over Lithuania. In total, there are 65 sculptures, the work of 49 artists. This mountain was known in the past as a popular place for the celebration of Jonines (Ivan Kupala Day), during which barrels of burning tar were rolled up from there at night.

Behind Juodkrantė rise sandy "Dead" or "Walking Dunes", whose height reaches 30-40 meters. And here is the State Bird Sanctuary and the Fringila ornithological station. During the migration season, numerous flocks of birds stop to rest in these places.

In the small villages of Pervalka and Preila, it is good for families to relax, especially for fishing enthusiasts and mushroom pickers. There are surprisingly mushroom and berry places - chic blueberries.

Nida is a piece of paradise: there are neat multi-colored houses with red tiled, and often with thatched roofs, flower beds everywhere. Almost every house is a cafe, beer bar or hotel. There are many rooms for rent in the private sector, and there is even a campsite for car tourists.

Immediately behind the village is the highest moving dune in Europe, Efa, 64 m high. One of the attractions of Nida is the House-Museum of the German writer, Nobel Prize winner Thomas Mann, who lived here in the summer with his family in 1930-1932. A cultural center was founded in the building of the writer's dacha. Evenings of classical music, poetry are organized here, every summer the days of Thomas Mann are held, for which many guests from Germany come to participate.

On the shore of the Curonian Lagoon there is a yacht club where you can rent boats. It is also convenient to rent bicycles in Nida. There is an excellent 20 km cycling trail connecting Nida, Preila and Pervalka.
